Military Academies Day

Nevada's congressional delegation has scheduled an information day for high school students and their parents interested in applying for admission to military service academies.

The program will be held Sept. 22, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Community College of Southern Nevada, Cheyenne campus at 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave in North Las Vegas.

Students beginning their senior year who are interested in applying for admission for the class entering the academies next school year are advised to contact their senator or representative's Las Vegas offices for application details. The application deadline for a congressional nomination is Nov. 1.

In brief

Several Army ROTC cadets from Southern Nevada have completed summer ROTC programs at Fort Lewis, Wash., and Fort Knox, Ky.

At the advanced camp, cadets complete a five-week course of intensive military leadership training and evaluation exercises in communications, management, and survival training. Upon successfully graduating from college, they will be commissioned as second lieutenants to serve in the U.S. Army, National Guard or Reserve.

The basic camp is a five-week training program that serves as the Army's two-year ROTC program entry point. College students experience and examine the Army without incurring an obligation and qualify for the advanced ROTC course program.
