Las Vegas area fishing report

The good and bad news for anglers is that there appears to be an abundance of threadfin shad throughout the lake. This bodes well for the future because it means there will be adequate forage for game fish in the coming months. Unfortunately, stripers and other game fish can be more difficult to catch because of the large amount of forage that is available.
On Saturday, an NDOW creel census clerk who was working at Overton Beach failed to check a single fish. He reported that fishing activity was very light, possibly due to the hot weather.
Anglers who have been fishing in the Boulder Basin have told NDOW that they are catching stripers in coves between Saddle Island and Las Vegas Wash and in open water from SaddleIsland to Black Island. Other areas that have been productive recently are the north end of Boxcar Cove and Crawdad Cove.
Rainbow trout fishing has been good following the weekly plants at Willow Beach. The next plant is scheduled for Friday.
Trout are rising in the evening, so casting flies may be the ticket for catching the fish. Daytime temperatures have been ranging from the high 80s to low 90s while evenings have been in the low 40s.
Anglers fishing for other warm water species have been successful using worms. Several largemouth bass ranging in size between 2 and 5 pounds have been caught at Floyd Lamb State Park using spinnerbaits and crankbaits.
