Educational programs set at Visitors Center

Not all programs at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area are hikes. In a series of Sunday educational programs Ranger Brian will present a 30 minute close-up view of the natural or cultural history of Red Rock Canyon Sept. 9, 23 and 30 at the Visitor Center. No sign-up is required.

Other programs coming up:

Desert Ecology Hike: Adults will discover some of the plants and animals, their mysteries and ecological interrelationships, in and around Sandstone Canyon on this two-mile, moderate canyon exploration Saturday.

Traditional Uses of Desert Plants: Ages 10 to adult will learn how Native Americans used the diverse Red Rock Canyon plant life on this moderately easy, short hike through Lost Creek on Sunday.

Free blood tests, exams scheduled on Sept. 8

Free prostate screenings will be offered 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 8 at two locations: the radiation oncology office at the Sunrise Diagnostic Center, 3006 Maryland Parkway, Suite 100, and the radiation oncology office at MountainView Hospital, 3150 N. Tenaya Way, Suite 160.

The screenings will include both a prostatic specific antigen blood test and an exam by a physician.

Men should be 40 or older and should not have had a prostate exam within the last year or a previous prostate cancer diagnosis.

Appointments are required. For scheduling, call 731-8788 between 8:30 a.m.and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Professor to speak at History Project lunch

The Nevada Women's History Project-Southern Region is hosting a luncheon at 10:15 a.m. Sept. 8 at Gordon McCaw School, 57 Lynn Lane, Henderson.

Guest speaker is UNLV Geology professor David Weide, whose topic will be "Environmental and Geological Hazards in Southern Nevada."

Station Casinos

has launched a $1.2 million partnership program to benefit the Southern Nevada community. The "Caring for Our Community" is designed to increase financial support for local charitable groups, expand the company's partnership with needy elementary and secondary schools and publicize the program so others can get involved.

The 10th annual Western States Sexual Assault/Sexual Abuse
