ATLANTA -- Las Vegas' Billy Harvey reached the "Sweet 16" this morning at the U.S. Amateur Championship.
Harvey defeated Jerry Courville of Milford, Conn., today 2 and 1 at the historic East Lake Golf Club, pulling away after the match was all square after 14 holes. Harvey posted a birdie on the par-4 15th and then closed out the match with a par on No. 17 when the 42-year-old Courville recoded a bogey.
On Wednesday, Harvey beat Matt Hendrix in the first round of match play 3 and 1 after losing the first four holes.
Harvey, a Bonanza High graduate and an All-American at BYU, was scheduled to play Daniel Summerhays this afternoon for the right to advance to Friday's semifinals.
Summerhays, a 17-year-old from Farmington, Utah, beat Kelly Brooks 2 and 1 in his morning match.
Meanwhile, defending champion Jeff Quinney advanced to the second round of match play, beating former college teammate Chez Reavie 4 and 3 on Wednesday. He was still on the course this morning at press time.
The 22-year-old Quinney is trying to become only the fourth repeat winner since World War II, joining Harvie Ward Jr. (1955-56), Jay Sigel (1982-83) and Tiger Woods (1994-96).
"It's a huge thing to put on your resume," Quinney said. "To have that trophy in your house for a year was amazing. It was sad to see it go back, but I'm going to try my hardest to get it back."
