Lake Mohave claims man

A California man drowned Sunday on Lake Mohave, a National Park Service official said.

Jesus Maciel, 48, of Lake Elsinor, Calif., was on a boat with his family when he jumped into the water to cool off. Maciel started to have difficulty almost immediately. When he was pulled back onto the boat, the family headed back to Katherine's Landing, on the Arizona side of the lake north of Bullhead City, officials said.

Members of his family, including a nurse, performed CPR in the boat on the way in from the lake. National Park Service rangers continued CPR until Maciel was taken to Western Regional Medical Center, official said.

Nuclear detection program planned

The Department of Energy is reviewing the impacts on the environment that would be caused by building a center at the Nevada Test Site to train people how to keep nuclear weapons safe and how to detect them.

The DOE's National Nuclear Security Administration plans to relocate a group of facilities known as Technical Area 18 from the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico by the end of 2004.

The Test Site, 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, is one of four options for the project.

The public is invited to attend a meeting from 7 to 10 p.m. on Sept. 13 at the NNSA's Nevada Operations Office, 232 Energy Way, off Losee Road in North Las Vegas.

Former president to speak here

Former President Bill Clinton is in town until Wednesday for speaking appearances before a convention of 8,000 mostly female sales representatives.

The sales people are with a company called the MIKI group that manufactures vitamins and other supplements. The convention is being held at UNLV's Cox Pavilion.

Clinton was scheduled to speak to the women in three groups of about 2,700 each.

A spokesperson at Clinton's office in New York declined to release details about the former president's schedule. The convention's producer, Extraordinary Events of Sherman Oaks, Calif., said the Secret Service and the company decided to deny press access to the event.
