Forum scheduled in Henderson

The Nevada State Psychological Association is holding a forum, "Warning Signs for Parents and Teens," on prevention of violence among youngsters 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Drive, Henderson.

The Henderson Parks and Recreation Department is co-sponsoring the program.

The forum is designed to facilitate communication between parents and teens, reveal the warning signs for violence and provide skills for prevention. It is free.

Children play while parents exercise

Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Drive, will host Rugrats Roundup, 9:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday for children ages 18 months to 2 years.

The children will take part in supervised playtime while parents exercise or participate in a recreation class. Cost is $8 per child. Call 450-5885 to register.

Henderson facilities to host programs

Recreation centers in Henderson have scheduled registration sessions for Safekey and Teen Scene programs

Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Drive; Silver Springs Recreation Center, 1951 Silver Springs Parkway, and Black Mountain Recreation Center, 599 Greenway Road have scheduled registration at 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday; 1-4 p.m., Sunday and Aug. 26; 6-9 p.m., Aug. 24; and 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Aug. 25.

Cost is $41 for five days.

Safekey provides a safe, supervised environment for elementary and junior high school students before and after school. Call 565-2124.

Moose Lodge event a fund-raiser

Children are invited to an Ice Cream Party 1 p.m. Saturday at the Moose Lodge, 1600 Gragson Ave. Guests include: tap dancer Chaz Wolcott; Christian rap singers DOG, and Deputy Drip of the Southern Nevada Water Authority. Admission is free. The event is a fund-raiser to support college scholarship funds. Call 248-1232.

A free slide presentation on desert tortoises

will be presented 1 p.m. Saturday at the Nevada State Museum in Lorenzi Park. Jerry Shupe of Tortoise Group Adoptions will show different ways to meet the needs of pet tortoises. Call 739-8043.

Culture Shock Las Vegas

will hold its fourth Cardio Hip Hop Explosion 1 p.m. Saturday at McDermott P.E. Center on the UNLV campus for ages 7-17. Cardio hip hop is a playful, calorie-burning set of moves based on street dance and created as an alternative to getting involved with gangs and drugs. Cost is $5. Call 223-3038.

Catholic Charities Social Services

will give 500 needy school-age children free school supplies and backpacks from 1-4 p.m. Saturday in the St. Vincent Plaza Lied Dining Room 1502 N. Main St. Parents must register before Aug. 25. Call 383-0766.
