Former New York Islanders and Las Vegas Thunder coach Butch Goring was hired Monday as coach and assistant general manager of the Anchorage Aces of the West Coast Hockey League.
Goring was fired in March by the Islanders, who finished last season with the NHL's worst record. He coached the team to a 55-100-17 mark after taking the job in 1999.
He also served as coach of the Boston Bruins in 1985-86 season and part of the next season, compiling a 42-38-13 mark.
Goring also coached Utah and Denver of the International Hockey League, the Capital District Islanders of the American Hockey League, and Spokane of the Western Hockey League.
In 16 NHL seasons as a player, Goring had 375 goals and 513 assists, and was on the Islanders' Stanley Cup-winning teams from 1980-83.
