2 more miles of Las Vegas Beltway open

Clark County officials today formally announced the opening of more than 2 miles of new Las Vegas Beltway -- between Summerlin Parkway and Cheyenne Avenue.
The recent addition cost about $17.8 million.
It's a significant milestone for travelers in the busy northwest valley, county Public Works spokesman Bobby Shelton said. More than 2.3 million cubic yards of earth had to be moved before the four, below-grade travel lanes could be built.
The beltway is now 28 miles, which means that more than half of the 53-mile project has been completed, he said.
Four more beltway segments are under construction and are expected to be completed by August 2002.
The county is designing the final sections of the beltway's western segment.
