Letter: Keep government out of business
Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001 | 10:22 a.m.
Timothy Hay, the state consumer advocate, states that Nevada Power should build new power plants, rather than have to purchase up to 50 percent of its power. Since we only have peak demands for a few of the hot months each year, it would seem that this investment, at about $500 million per 1,000 megawatts, would stand idle unless they were able to sell the excess power.
I would trust Nevada Power on how to run its business for the best cost benefit of both the consumers and the company, rather than the state consumer advocate, whose office a few years ago criticized Nevada Power for entering long-term contracts.
Have we learned nothing from California when the government tries to run private business?
