Las Vegan earns silver dolphins

Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001 | 8:24 a.m.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Kristopher Clancy, son of Sherrie Resson of Las Vegas, was recently presented the "Silver Dolphins" pin with his designation as an enlisted submarine warfare specialist.

Clancy serves aboard the ballistic submarine USS Ohio, which is homeported in Silverdale, Wash.

Clancy earned the insignia after spending more than 48 weeks learning the different phases of submarine operations and demonstrating the skills necessary to work and live aboard a submarine. He then passed an examination and oral review, which was administered by qualified submariners.

Border dispute exercise

The Nevada National Guard's 440th Signal Company recently participated in "Golden Thunder," a conflict scenario involving border disputes similar to the ongoing conflicts in the Balkans. The exercise was carried out in South Dakota and Wyoming.

According to Lt. Col. Terry Sullivan, the Guard's 422nd Signal Battalion commander, members of the battalion's Las Vegas based 440th Signal Co. rolled out more than 12 miles of cable during the first week of the exercise and then hooked up telephones from field subscribers to the switch.

"We supported the whole scheme of exercise communications where cable and wire was needed," said company commander Capt. Steven Valeski.
