Program seeking community volunteers
The Urban Emphasis Scouting Program is seeking volunteers. The program promotes youth development in urban and high-risk areas of the community by providing and supporting Scouting opportunities for disadvantaged youths.

Urban Scouting also is seeking donations of used Scout uniforms, which will be made available to youths enrolled in urban Scouting units. Call Sharon Blackman, 735-7762.
The Urban Scouting Committee meets at 11:30 a.m. the second Wednesday of the month at the Culinary Training Center dining room of the Days Inn, 707 E. Fremont St. Persons interested in the program are invited to attend.
Programs scheduled for children, adults
Hikes and other free educational programs are offered each week for children and adults at Red Rock Canyon. Among the coming events are:
Old Western Pioneer: Ages 8 to adult are welcome to wander back to the homestead ruins at Pine Creek and learn about life in the canyon 100 years ago.
Flash Floods: Adults can find out more about the water and the desert while exploring the Wheeler Springs riparian area on this one-mile hike.
Desert Mysteries: Twelve-year-olds to adults can discover some weird things on this three-mile moderately easy hike into OakCreek Canyon.
Reservations are required for all programs, which begin at the Visitors Center. To make reservations or for information call 363-1922.
District's newsletter due at parents' homes
Information to help parents and students prepare for the upcoming school year, which begins Aug. 30, will be arriving soon in local mailboxes.
The 12-page Back to School Reporter newsletter features information about elementary and secondary schools, the before-and-after-school Safekey program, dress code, school lunches, various district programs, high school athletics, health services, graduation requirements and more.
Families who do not receive a Reporter by Friday may obtain a copy at their neighborhood school or in the Education Center lobby, 2832 E. Flamingo Road, online (www.ccsd.net) or by calling 799-5304.
Celebrate the opening
of two miles of the Las Vegas Beltway stretching from Summerlin Parkway to Cheyenne Avenue 9 a.m. Friday on the beltway, north of Summerlin Parkway.
A poolside performance
by Hot Lava will be hosted 7 p.m. Saturday by the Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Drive. Call565-2367.
