Letter: Bush destroys Clinton’s work

Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001 | 8:48 a.m.

It took President Bush only three months to destroy the nation's economic stability, which Bill Clinton achieved in his 8-year period as the country's economic steward. Bush created the nation's present economic dilemma by bullheadedly pushing through the tax bill as his first legislative act.

Clinton's economic policies had reduced the record-breaking Reagan-Bush deficit. His policies achieved a huge surplus. The nation's debt was being paid off.

Then along comes the Bush tax bill. In one big swoosh, the surplus was gutted. Paying down the debt was slowed. We are having difficulty maintaining Medicare, Social Security, health care and paying the bills for governing. And, there are threats of a return to deficit spending.

Bush brought this on for the sole purpose of obtaining huge tax benefits for his rich buddies. Oh, yes, we nonrich were included in the penny ante tax rebate.

This was a public relations gimmick to make us overlook the rich robbing the U.S. Treasury.
