Home invasion suspects indicted
Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001 | 11 a.m.
A 26-count indictment has been returned against two men accused in three June home invasions, two of which victims said they were sexually assaulted.
The indictment, unsealed Friday, charges Javier Campos, 18, and Leonard Thomas Hunt, 24, in three home invasions within 24 hours in western Las Vegas.
The men face multiple counts of burglary, robbery, kidnapping and sexual assault. They are scheduled to be arraigned by District Judge Michael Cherry Thursday.
The men are being held in the Clark County Detention Center, each on $1 million bail.
Metro Police said the men were tracked down by cell phone calls made on a phone stolen during one of the home invasions.
Police say the first home invasion occurred about 5 a.m. June 25. Two men forced their way into an apartment in the 4500 block of South Durango Drive when a woman answered their knock on the door.
The woman said she and a male friend were robbed of cash and a watch at gunpoint and that she was sexually assaulted, police said.
At 1 a.m. the next day a couple was sleeping with their 2-year-old daughter in the 7600 block of Raven Hills when they awoke to find three men, who they say were pointing guns at them.
The couple were robbed of jewelry, cash, weapons and a Motorola cell phone. They were then placed in a closet and told not to come out for five minutes.
About three hours later a Desert Heart Court resident woke up when a man tapped her on a shoulder.
Three men were pointing guns at her and her male friend and, when she screamed, her 8-year-old daughter ran into the room and joined them in bed, according to police reports.
After ransacking the apartment, one of the men took the woman into another room and sexually assaulted her repeatedly, according to police.
The suspects left with a DVD player, jewelry, cash, two cell phones, a puppy and a check for $200.
According to court records, an Aug. 22 preliminary hearing has been scheduled for a third suspect, Ronaldo Quintero.
Police records indicate Quintero confessed to taking part in two of the home invasions, both times entering through unlocked doors.
