Las Vegas area fishing report
Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001 | 11:11 a.m.
LAKE MEAD - Boaters are reeling in plump striped bass in the lake's Boulder Basin while shore anglers are still waiting for fish to come within casting range.
Over the weekend several boaters reported to the Nevada Division of Wildlife that they caught stripers in open water between Saddle Island and Black Island. The fish, which ranged from three to five pounds, were caught from the surface with Jumpin' Minnow lures.
There have been reports of stripers breaking the surface in the early morning hours at Kingman Wash. There has been very little success from Callville Bay Boulder Canyon. Anglers who have been fishing in the Overton Arm are still having success above Overton Beach Marina and Fish Island. Most of the stripers in those areas range from one to three pounds.
Largemouth bass are at depths of 30 feet or more. During summer the fish escape to deep water where the temperatures are cooler.
LAKE MOHAVE - Good fishing and large crowds of anglers continue to be found at Willow Beach following the weekly rainbow trout plants. The next plant is scheduled to take place on Friday.
The hot weather has been keeping fishing activity to a minimum in the Cottonwood Cove area. And those anglers who have been trying their luck have generally found that the fishing has been slow. About the only consistent success has been coming from the narrows above Cottonwood where boaters are catching striped bass that weigh from less than a pound to nearly two pounds.
WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA - Fishing has entered the summer doldrums and most anglers have been finding it difficult to catch fish.
Largemouth bass are being caught around sunset at Adams-McGill Reservoir, but the catch rate has generally been slow. Rainbow trout fishing has fallen off considerably during the past month due to warm water temperatures.
EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR - Shore fishing has been slow for stocked rainbow trout while boaters are having some success. The better fishing for boaters has been in the upper end of the lake.
ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR - An angler who was casting a plug from shore last week connected with a largemouth bass that weighed in at eight pounds, two ounces. Otherwise fishing has been slow for bass and trout.
NDOW said the lake's low water level and rising water temperature may soon cause stress to the game fish.
LAS VEGAS URBAN PONDS - Channel catfish are scheduled to be stocked into Floyd Lamb State Park, Lorenzi Park Pond and Sunset Park Pond by Friday.
