NLV to dedicate Cooper Memorial

A fire station expected to open next month in North Las Vegas Wednesday was named in honor of a former firefighter who died of cancer a year ago.

The Brent Cooper Memorial station is at Losee and Frehner roads.

Cooper began his career with the fire department in 1986 and worked until he was diagnosed with cancer in June of last year. He died the following August.

Brent Cooper Memorial will replace Fire Station 52 at Carey Avenue and Daley Street.

Fire officials expect to hold a dedication ceremony at the end of this month, but do not expect the fire station to open until September.

Fire Chief Robert Dodge said the 7,500-square-foot station costs $2.8 million and will house 10 firefighters. Fire Station 52 is 5,500 square feet and accommodates 4 firefighters.

Dodge said the location of the new station is more important than the extra space because 60 percent of the population in North Las Vegas now lives north of Alexander Road.

Event scheduled at Lied facility

National Kids Day's inaugural celebration, the first of its kind, will be celebrated 1-3 p.m. Sunday at the Boys and Girls Club's Lied Memorial facility, 2850 S. Lindell Road and will include interactive games provided by Joy of Sports.

All proceeds will benefit the Keystone Clubs. For more information, visit www.kidsday.net.
