Tiger Jam’ benefits area charities, organizations

Friday, April 27, 2001 | 9:07 a.m.

Bill Maher, star of ABC's late-night show "Politically Incorrect, will emcee "Tiger Jam IV" Saturday at Mandalay Bay Events Center.

The benefit, hosted by golf great Tiger Woods, will feature performances by pop group Third Eye Blind and rocker John Mellencamp.

"Tiger Jam" is a charity fund-raiser for the Tiger Woods Foundation, which was founded in 1996 by the golfer and his father, Earl Woods. The organization works to "empower young people to reach their highest potential," according to a media release.

Through golf clinics, motivational speakers, educational programs and grants, the organization claims to have worked with more than 70,000 children throughout the United States.

Several programs and organizations in Southern Nevada received benevolent grants from the proceeds generated from last year's "Tiger Jam III" event, which was also held at Mandalay Bay and featured performances by singers Christina Aguilera, LeAnn Rimes and Seal.

Child Haven, which provides abused, neglected and abandoned children with temporary care and treatment, received a $30,000 grant as a result of the "Tiger Jam III."

The organization will use the funds to purchase items on its "Adopt-A-Cottage Wish Lists," including clothing, arts and crafts, school supplies and sports equipment. The monies will also help pay for group outings and activities for children at Child Haven.

Other grant recipients included the Greater Las Vegas Inner City Games, the Las Vegas Founders' Golf Foundation and the Leadership Las Vegas Youth Program.
