Feb. 11: Tyson KO'd

Story: Boxer Mike Tyson returned to the courthouse in Indianapolis today a convicted rapist, awaiting a routine probation meeting after being found guilty of attacking a Miss Black America contestant he lured to his hotel room.

The conviction late Monday was Tyson's darkest moment in a troubled history with women, and it threatened to end the rags-to-riches career of the youngest heavyweight champion ever.

The 25-year-old boxer could get up to 60 years in prison at the sentencing March 6. But based on average sentences given in similar cases in Indiana, he will probably receive between seven and 11 years, said Deputy Barbara Trathen. Tyson remained free on $30,000 bail.

April 30: Verdict angers, stuns Las Vegas

Story: Stunned, perhaps, but not necessarily surprised.

That was the reaction of many Southern Nevadans to the acquittal of four white Los Angeles police officers whose beating of a black motorist, Rodney King, was captured on video tape.

Local police and others expect racial tensions to rise locally in the verdict's aftermath, but are hopeful the violence that has engulfed Los Angeles will not spread to Southern Nevada. No violence had been reported this morning, but authorities did discover fresh anti-police graffiti on a wall at UNLV.

Nov. 4: Clinton Vows New Blood

Story: President-elect Bill Clinton today promised "the new blood, the new direction" to change America, casting his victory over President Bush as a mandate for a fresh economic course. He moved quickly to shape a Clinton administration and the 100-day agenda he will submit to a new-look Democratic Congress.

Dec. 1: U.S. troops to Somalia

Story: U.S. Marines will be off the coast of Somalia by Wednesday, ready to prepare for landing a U.S. or allied military force to protect food aid should the United Nations authorize that move, Pentagon officials say.

U.S. military commanders were ready to send 15,000 to 20,000 troops to the region, one senior Pentagon official said.

A three-ship contingent led by the USS Tripoli is steaming west through the Indian Ocean and "will be on station off Mogadishu as early as Wednesday," the official said.
