Male Athlete of the Week: TERRENCE RUFFEN
School: Chaparral
Class: Senior
Sport: Track
Last week: Ruffen, in his first season on the Chaparral track squad, captured the high jump and long jump competition to lead the Cowboys to a team victory over Bonanza and The Meadows on Tuesday. His high jump of 6-8 was the best in Southern Nevada this year -- and just one inch off the winning jump at last year's state meet -- while his long jump of 20-6 was Chaparral's first over 20 feet this season. "He has a load of potential," Cowboys coach Marshall Hanson said. "He's just getting a feel for it. Once he really starts using a classical approach, he has the potential of doing seven-feet plus."
Male Athlete of the Week: ANGELINA COLAVITO
School: Bishop Gorman
Class: Freshman
Sport: Swimming
Last week: Colavito won the 100 (55.87) and 200 (2:01.97) freestyle events and helped the Gaels to victories in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays as Gorman swam past Centennial on Saturday, 166-124. Colavito, who primarily swims the 50 and 100 freestyle, is undefeated in all competition this season. "She probably has the fastest start in Nevada," Gorman coach Ron Aitken said. "If you swim against her, you're looking at her feet almost as soon as you hit the water, and you have to be a top-notch swimmer to chase her down. She should be our state champion for the 50 freestyle, and maybe for the 100 free."
