Poll suggests doubt about support for superintendent

Thursday, April 26, 2001 | 9:48 a.m.

A survey by the Clark County Association of School Administrators shows skepticism of Superintendent Carlos Garcia's education plans for the district, including Edison Schools.

Edison, the nation's biggest for-profit manager of public schools, plans to take over seven district schools this fall.

The survey was compiled by a panel from the union and indicated that there are concerns not only of Edison Schools but also of the reading improvement program, staff development, school police, the superintendent, eighth grade algebra and school district finances.

"It certainly has given us some food for thought," said Allin Chandler, executive director of the administrator's union. He said the survey indicates that those who were polled are not strong supporters of Garcia's vision for the district.

Among 84 elementary school principals surveyed, 4 percent strongly agreed and 7 percent agreed that they support Edison Schools. A total of 87 percent were either unsure or disagreed with the concept of having Edison manage schools here.

At the middle school level, 18 percent favored Edison, and 82 percent were either unsure or opposed to Edison. Forty-one surveys were sent to middle schools, and 22 were returned.

The survey counters reports heard at School Board meetings that school district employees overwhelmingly support Edison.

He also said the survey points to serious concerns about communication.

Among high school principals, 15 percent strongly agreed or agreed that Garcia consistently seeks input from school principals. Eighty-five percent were either unsure or disagreed with the statement that he seeks input from principals.

Garcia could not be reached for comment.
