Three special issues approved for LV

Three bills dealing with special license plates for activities in Southern Nevada cleared the Senate Tuesday without a dissenting vote.

Senate Bill 414 allows a limitied issuance of plates to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Las Vegas in 2005; Senate Bill 409 permits plates to support preserving federal lands surrounding Las Vegas and Senate Bill 264 provides for special plates for "support of the history of atomic testing in Nevada."

The state Department of Motor Vehicles and Public Safety must receive applications from 250 people before it can start manufacturing any of the plates. The extra money received from each plate would go to support the designated activity. All three bills go to the Assembly.

Senate passes Rx restrictions

A bill cracking down on illegal Internet pharmacies has been passed by the Senate in an effort to protect Nevada consumers.

Senate Bill 397 would require Internet pharmacies inside and outside Nevada to be certified by the state Board of Pharmacy before they could do business.

Also, a doctor would be prohibited from prescribing a drug to a patient he has not examined in the past six months, and the doctor should not prescribe the medication if he has reason to believe that an illegal Internet pharmacy will fill the prescription.

The vote on SB397, sending it to the Assembly, was 21-0.
