Letter: No real need for proposed college
Monday, April 23, 2001 | 9:10 a.m.
The irony in Assembly Speaker Richard Perkins saying that "taxpayers need assurance that the $1 billion being spent on higher education is being done efficiently" -- when he refers to spending $90,000 on an audit of the University and Community College System of Nevada -- is utterly remarkable when one considers Perkins' leadership in advocating the creation of a new $1.3 billion college in Henderson (his district) where there are absolutely no demonstrable needs for this college.
We are told this new college is needed to train teachers and nurses, yet there are no waiting lists at the Community College of Southern Nevada or UNLV for these programs. Unfortunately, this little piggy will grow to be very large pork with its own library and computer systems and administrative layers, and it is anything but an efficient use of taxpayer dollars.
