April 4: Iraquis balk at cease-fire terms

Story: United Nations diplomats say they're confident the burden of trade sanctions will compel Iraq to accept their tough cease-fire terms, and have turned to considering how to protect Iraq's rebellious minorities.,

The resolution for a permanent cease-fire in the Persian Gulf War, overwhelmingly approved by the Security Council on Wednesday, is unique in United Nations history, because the world body has never before set peace terms after a war.

May 6: Henderson gasps

Story: A leak in a 150-ton tank of chlorine at Pioneer Chlor Alkali Co. spewed a gray-green noxious cloud across the southeast Las Vegas Valley today, sending about 100 people to area hospitals and shutting down traffic and the city of Henderson.

At 10:30 a.m. residents were told they could return to their homes in the 20-square-mile area that was evacuated. About 2,500 residents living east of Boulder Highway and north of Lake Mead Drive to Flamingo Road were evacuated.

Sept. 23: Fight for right to picket

Story: Culinary workers plan to go to court to see if they have the right to pass out leaflets and talk to the customers at the doors of the Frontier hotel-casino, where the union has been striking for three days.

During a demonstration Sunday, more than two dozen members of the Culinary union, including President Hattie Canty and Secretary-Treasurer Jim Arnold, were arrested outside the Strip hotel.

Metro Police Lt. Jim Dillon said 27 strikers were arrested on trespassing charges while the union put the number of arrests at 28.

Oct. 7: Sex talk embroils nominee

Story: Allegations that Clarence Thomas sexually harassed his assistant raised concern in the Senate today about his nomination to the Supreme Court.

At a press conference, Anita Hill discussed her charges that Thomas made offensive, sexually loaded remarks to her several times in the early 1980s.
