Sun Athletes of the week: Micah Schnurstein and Shannon Crisp
Thursday, April 19, 2001 | 11:24 a.m.
Named on April 19, 2001
Male Athlete of the Week: MICAH SCHNURSTEIN
School: Basic
Class: Junior
Sport: Baseball
Last week: The Wolves' second baseman went 9-for-18 with 11 RBIs to help his team to a 5-0 record and the Classic Division championship at the Mike Morrow Lion's Invitational in San Diego. Schnurstein lifted Basic to a 4-3 win over Montgomery (Calif.) with a grand slam in the tournament opener, and gave the Wolves the lead for good in Saturday's title game with a two-run double in a 7-5 victory over Eastlake (Calif.). "He came up with some pretty clutch hits for us," Basic coach Mike Kazek said."(Shortstop) Mark Rose (11-for-17) was on base most of the time, and it seemed like Micah was always driving him in."
Female Athlete of the Week: SHANNON CRISP
School: Centennial
Class: Freshman
Sport: Softball
Last week: Crisp went 3-0 with a pair of saves to lead the Bulldogs to six victories and the championship at the Fred Davison Memorial Tournament. The freshman did not allow an earned run in 25 2/3 innings, striking out 39 batters and allowing just six hits. Crisp also hit .278 in the tournament with a triple, three RBIs and a pair of runs. "Shannon hits her spots, doesn't make mistakes," Centennial coach Cyndi Parus said. "Whether something's working or not, she finds a way to get it done. Against (California's) Mira Mesa (a 2-0 Bulldog win), Shannon literally kept us in the game. Their pitcher was the best we've faced all year."
