Senate approves measure 21-0
A bill that would prohibit smoking on school property and stop advertising of tobacco products at schools, in their publications or at any activity at the school, was approved by the Senate Wednesday 21-0.
Senate Bill 258, which goes to the Assembly, would require Millennium Scholarship students to sign a written promise to refrain from using tobacco while collecting the scholarship money, which comes from the state's tobacco settlement.
The bill requires taxicabs to post signs on their vehicles indicating whether smoking is permitted.
Protection on jobs approved
Employers with more than 50 workers would be required to grant leave with or without pay to legislators who serve on committees meeting between regular sessions of the Legislature, under a bill approved by the Senate Wednesday.
The employer would also be required to give leave for a lawmaker to attend a meeting of a "committee, other than a legislative committee if the employee is a member of the committee in his official capacity as a legislator." This could require leave be granted for a lawmaker who is a committee member of a national legislative group that is holding its sessions outside Nevada.
