Assembly passes measure protecting rodeos

SUN CAPITAL BUREAU

CARSON CITY -- A bill designed to prevent local governments from banning rodeos cleared the Assembly on Wednesday.

Controversy has followed Assembly Bill 208 since Tom Collins, D-North Las Vegas, introduced the measure as a sweeping bill to prohibit local governments from enacting any animal-related ordinances more strict than state law.

Opposition led to the bill's amendment, removing all provisions except for specific language dealing with rodeos and animal shows.

The bill states a local government shall not prohibit or impose restrictions on rodeos, livestock shows, circuses or animal exhibitions that are stricter than state law.

During previous testimony Collins said the measure was designed to prevent animal-rights groups such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals from enticing local governments to ban rodeos.

The Humane Society of the United States is lobbying against the bill.

AB208 passed 24-16 and is now forwarded to the Senate.
