Young to speak at annual dinner

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Steve Young will be the Wells Fargo Distinguished speaker for the 2001 UNLV Foundation annual dinner Saturday at the Bellagio.

The program will start at 6 p.m. with cocktails.

Each year the event honors the UNLV's major donors and members of the President's Inner Circle, Academic Corporate Council and President's Associates.

This year the event will also commemorate the foundation's 20th anniversary. For more information, call Stacy Fish at 895-3641.

Gardening tips available at park

Home gardeners will have an opportunity to learn how to grow pumpkins through a program "Great Pumpkin," which will take place 2-3 p.m. Saturday at Silver Springs Park, 1951 Silver Springs Parkway.

Participation is $2 per person (all ages). Participants will meet again on Oct. 27 when pumpkins will be judged to determine the heaviest and largest.

Housing authorities will host training session

The housing authorities of Clark County, Las Vegas and North Las Vegas will co-sponsor a Section 8 landlord briefing and lead-based paint training session 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday at the Venetian.

Invited to participate in the free program are private owners of rental properties throughout the community, whether past, current or potential landlords, who are interested in learning more about the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program.

Space will be limited to the first 300 registrants. Registration and inquiries should be directed to the Las Vegas Housing Authority, 922-6965.

Henderson schedules tree plantings at parks

The Henderson Parks and Recreation Department and the Henderson Commemorative Beautification Commission will host tree plantings at two local parks in preparation for Arbor Day.

The plantings will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Mountain View Park, 1959 Wigwam Parkway, and 10 a.m. April 25 at Wells Park, 1608 Moser Drive. All residents are invited to attend.

Henderson Councilman Steve Kirk will read proclamations commemorating each event, which will be followed by the planting of 20 ash trees.

Tournament on tap at Jewish center

The Jewish Community Center will host an all-day mah jongg tournament 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday in Beam Hall on the UNLV campus.

A $200 first-place cash prize will be awarded along with other cash prizes. Entry fees are $45 Jewish Community Center members and $55 for nonmembers.

The annual Aid For AIDS of Nevada

AIDS Walk and Bike Ride will begin at 8 a.m. with the sign-in/registration Sunday at the MGM MIRAGE Design Center, 3260 S. Industrial Road. Call 382-2326.
