Letter: Officials’ lying no big surprise
Monday, April 16, 2001 | 9:57 a.m.
In the April 5 edition, letter writer Vivien Cardinal commented on the campaign promises that President Bush, the younger, has broken since he has been in office. I'm not sure how old Cardinal is, but I still remember Bush, the elder, saying "No new taxes!" -- Richard Nixon claiming "I am not a crook!" -- Gerald Ford claiming there was no deal in his pardon of Nixon -- and Bill Clinton wagging his finger at us while claiming, "I did not have sex ... "! I don't mean to single out Cardinal because there have been other letters and other instances when people express disappointment because of broken campaign promises.
My advice to everybody disappointed with the actions of any elected officials is to not set your goals or expectations too high. Stay informed and vote for the people you believe will do the best job. But don't lose sight of the fact that candidates will do whatever it takes to get elected, some more then others. If they don't, their opponent will probably win the election.
