Letter: Animals aren’t good Easter gifts
Thursday, April 12, 2001 | 8:26 a.m.
The vast number of baby bunnies, chicks and ducks who are given as Easter gifts die within a few weeks, if not days. The majority of the ones that survive end up in shelters or are turned loose, making a slow death inevitable. People buy these cute babies with good intentions, but these animals suffer broken bones, internal injuries and carry diseases, such as salmonella.
This Easter you can help prevent unnecessary suffering by giving your children stuffed animals. After the holiday, if your family is ready for a pet, consider an adoptable dog or cat from our overflowing shelters or Humane Society. Animals are not "toys." Nothing with a heartbeat should be given as a "toy."
