Senate approves disincorporation
The city of Gabbs is one step closer to being just a name on the map without any real status.
On Wednesday the Senate voted to disincorporate Gabbs -- a move needed because the small city in Nye County is broke.
"It's a difficult situation to see the city of Gabbs disincorporated," said Sen. Mike McGinness, R-Fallon, chairman of the Taxation Committee. "There's no solution. This is the right thing to do."
The measure passed 19-2, with Sen. Mark Amodei, R-Carson City, and Mark James, R-Las Vegas, voting against.
The bill now is referred to the Assembly.
Policies urged for parent involvement
The state Board of Education would have to develop policies to encourage parental involvement in schools under a measure passed Wednesday by the Assembly.
Assembly Bill 201, sponsored by Debbie Smith, D-Sparks, requires the state board to adopt a policy for effective parental involvement. The policy would be developed with the assistance of school boards, parents and education personnel.
After it was unanimously approved, the bill was referred to the Senate.
The Assembly unanimously passed
a bill Wednesday granting grandparents and great-grandparents more access to child visitation. Assembly Bill 34, sponsored by Merle Berman, R-Las Vegas, allows visitation in cases in which a parent has died or has divorced or separated from his or her spouse. The bill now goes to the Senate.
