UNLV dean selected to Hall of Fame

Richard Flaherty, dean of UNLV's College of Business, entered the hall of fame at Arizona State University's College of Business Faculty for his 21 years of contributions to the school in Tempe, Ariz.

Flaherty served for three years as director of ASU's School of Accountancy and is a member of the American Accounting Association and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

He studied at the University of Kansas for his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees.

Silverado teacher honored for dedication

Don Curry, a teacher at Silverado High School, won the annual Radio Shack National Award in a ceremony held March 22 in St. Louis for his dedication to mathematics, science and technology.

His innovative teaching style motivated students to learn more about the sciences and to eventually pursue careers in these fields, contest officials said.

A total of 110 teachers each won a Compaq computer, one year free MSN Internet service, and $3,000 cash for experienced teachers and $1,000 for teachers with less than three years' experience.

Foothill High gets book donations

Foothill High School received a $4,000 donation Friday from Del Webb Corp. for purchasing books that will prepare students for proficiency exams.

Principal Bob Johns said he didn't know how the school would obtain the books without "Del Webb stepping up."

UNLV student Louise A. Roberts, 27, was awarded

a $10,000 scholarship in the 2000 CollegeNET Scholarship competition for her essay on "Precedents and Presidents: The 2000 Presidential Election," this year's topic. Roberts is a senior majoring in English and plans to continue her studies in graduate school.
