Letter: Airplane noise driving resident to mull moving
Tuesday, April 10, 2001 | 9:10 a.m.
I've been at home now for the past two hours listening to one jet after another fly directly over my house, unable to concentrate on anything other than how this has gone on for nearly the entire three months that I've lived at my new house (Red Flag or not doesn't seem to make a whole lot of difference), and I wonder why it's so important to the approximately half a million people who live under the flight patterns of Nellis that "they've been here longer than we have."
Our quality of lives suffer, the property values suffer, the Northeast continues its title as the worst part of the valley in which to live -- and all because the Air Force base was there first, as if the Air Force is a Native American tribe with cultural rights, rather than an entity funded with our tax dollars.
Maybe someone should look into sending Nellis to Yucca Mountain, or at least look into diminishing the number of flights going over incorporated areas, so I can continue to plan on raising my children here, instead of joining the exodus of the thousands who have realized the truth about Las Vegas: There may be a lot of jobs, but unless you can afford Summerlin or Green Valley, it's not such a good place to live.
