Ensign picks Reno lawyer for Nevada’s U.S. attorney post

Tuesday, April 10, 2001 | 10:55 a.m.

The top lawyer in the Reno division of Nevada's U.S. attorney's office has been recommended to be the state's top U.S. attorney.

Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., tapped Daniel Bogden for the job at a media conference in Reno on Monday. Bogden has served in the Reno branch of the U.S. attorney's office for 10 years.

Ensign, as the state's top-ranking senator of the president's party, has the privilege of recommending federal appointments, such as U.S. attorney and federal judges.

President Bush must approve the nomination, and the Senate must confirm it. Ensign sent a letter of recommendation to Bush on Friday.

Ensign said Bogden is a "tenacious litigator" and a skilled manager.

"He has a list of prosecutorial accomplishments that reflect the kind of person we want for this position," Ensign said in a written statement.

In a prepared statement Bogden said, "As our office moves forward our goal is to seek justice, no matter how difficult at times that might be."

Bogden has prosecuted cases against cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamine dealers, rapists and automobile theft ring leaders.

Bogden would replace U.S. Attorney Kathryn Landreth, a Democrat who was recommended by Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., and had been in the job since 1993. She resigns this month after President Bush asked Clinton-era U.S. attorneys to step down.

Bogden, 45, began his career as a member of the Air Force's judge advocate general's office.

He graduated from Toledo College of Law in Ohio in 1981.

The U.S. attorney's office is responsible for prosecuting cases brought by the federal government and defending the nation when the United States gets sued.
