A 31-year-old man was held in the Clark County Detention Center this morning, charged with killing an elderly man he was staying with.
Randy Woods was booked into the jail on murder, robbery and grand larceny auto charges Monday. He is accused of killing 88-year-old Ray T. Schreiber in a condominium on Lorilyn Avenue near UNLV, Lt. Wayne Petersen of Metro Police's homicide unit said.
The mother of the suspect, who is also a friend of the victim, called police about 9:15 a.m. Monday reporting the suspicious disappearance of Schreiber. She went into the condominium with a key she had and found Schreiber dead in the laundry room with obvious wounds in his head, Petersen said.
Woods was stopped in Schreiber's car about 10:20 a.m. Monday near Tropicana Avenue and McLeod Drive. Woods, whose mother told police he walked away from a voluntary commitment at a mental health facility last week, has known Schreiber for years and had been staying with him the past few days, Petersen said.
Schreiber's slaying is the 42nd homicide so far this year, compared with 27 homicides at the same point last year.
