Local teams score in NBA tourney
Three Southern Nevada teams took second and third places in the NBA 2Ball competition before a Los Angeles Lakers basketball game April 1 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Dean Winkelried and Christian Volesky of Henderson finished second and Sarah Maynor and Theresa Dixon of Las Vegas took third in the 8-to-9-year-old division.
Nathan Olmos Corona and Vince Fanning of Las Vegas scored a second-place finish among 10- and 11-year-olds.
They had been selected from among 2,500 children in the Las Vegas Valley who had competed in preliminary NBA 2Ball competitions.
A total of 32 players from four different states represented the Western region in Los Angeles.
The NBA 2ball competitions seek to teach children teamwork, sportsmanship and fundamental basketball skills through the competitions.
