Letter: Scouts punished for protecting innocent kids

Monday, April 9, 2001 | 9:21 a.m.

Two Sunday nights ago on "60 Minutes" they broadcast about how bad the Boy Scouts of America is to deny homosexuals the right to be leaders in the Scouts. United Way and other so-called charitable organizations have withdrawn their support of the BSA for that reason, stating that it is discriminating against sexual deviants.

How odd since in Las Vegas a case was just heard in court how a deviant took sexual advantage of young boys who were 12 to 15 years old and was their baseball coach. In our newspapers and TV news broadcasts we are showered with news of some local schoolteachers having sex with their students. In today's news we find three teachers in Woodstock, Ga., being accused of having sex with their students.

When will something be done to protect our young children from this sort of behavior as the Boy Scouts of America has wisely done. If we can't trust our children with our paid teachers, baseball coaches, football coaches, etc., how do we see that our kids are not exposed to this sort of garbage? I can't believe that schools and police departments are denying access to the Scouts when the BSA is only protecting these boys. United Way and others pulling their support borders on the criminal. I, for one, will not contribute to any charity that does this and will encourage others to do the same.
