Story: The tanker Exxon Valdez, trying to steer clear of icebergs while loaded with 1.3 million barrels of oil, ran aground on a charted reef Friday and spilled 200,000 barrels of Alaskan crude, endangering marine life and shutting down a major port.
April 20: 47 sailors killed in battleship explosion
Story: The Navy was attempting Thursday to determine the cause of the explosion aboard the World War II battleship USS Iowa that left at least 47 sailors dead in one of the worst U.S. naval accidents in recent history.
