Union wins right to represent LV casino mechanics

A federal judge upheld a finding by the National Labor Relations Board that a union's collective bargaining agreement doesn't preclude it from representing slot mechanics at the Tropicana hotel-casino.
Tropicana sued the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 501 in 1999, alleging it breached agreements by filing a petition with the NLRB seeking certification of a representative among mechanics employed in Tropicana's slot repair department.
Tropicana claimed the union had waived its right to extend the scope of its representation.
An election in January 2000 resulted in a 9-6 vote in favor of representation by the union and the NLRB certified the union as an exclusive bargaining representative for the mechanics.
