Thomas expected to play in scrimmage

Jason Thomas' injured right foot is feeling a lot better. And so is UNLV head football coach John Robinson.
Thomas, who had his foot placed in a cast in January for almost two months when it was discovered he was developing a stress fracture, is healthy again and has been impressive during UNLV's spring football workouts.
"He's doing great," Robinson said. "He has twice as much focus on detail now. And his foot is improved. We don't even think about it anymore."
Thomas, who could pop up on some All-American and Heisman Trophy lists in the fall, is expected to play about half of Saturday's 50-play scrimmage at Rebel Park with redshirt freshman Kurt Nantkes getting the other snaps.
The scrimmage is part of what is being called "Kick Off 2001." The event starts at 9:30 a.m. with an Easter egg hunt for children 12 and under in front of Earl E. Wilson Stadium and concludes with a $5 barbecue with players and coaches catered by Big Dog's Hospitality around noon.
The first 250 fans at the scrimmage will also get a free disposable camera to take pictures of players and coaches. Robinson will have a wireless microphone to do play-by-play and interviews during the scrimmage.
"We'll go at least 50 plays I'd say," Robinson said. "It'll give the fans a chance to meet the players and watch the action close up. It should be a fun day."
The Rebels conclude spring practice on April 14.
Among those scheduled to play again this year are 1981 Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Allen, NFL Hall of Famers Ronnie Lott and Jackie Slater and current NFL stars Keyshawn Johnson and Rob Johnson. Former UNLV basketball star Reggie Theus, Colorado State coach Sonny Lubick, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops and San Diego coach Ted Tollner are among the other celebrities who are expected to play.
Each celebrity is paired with a foursome. Cost of the event, which benefits UNLV's football program and is tax deductible, is $1,000 per person or $4,000 per foursome.
"It's a good way to help the football program and it's a lot of fun," Robinson said.
