Longtime educator Beitz dies at 77

Willard John Beitz, a former high school principal and assistant superintendent of the Clark County School District, died Sunday at a local hospital. He was 77.

Services for the Las Vegas resident of 46 years will be 1 p.m. Friday in Christ Church Episcopal, 2000 Maryland Parkway. Burial will be in Palm Valley View Memorial Park.

Beitz, a local educator for 27 years, was principal at Western and Clark high schools prior to becoming assistant superintendent of secondary education. He retired in 1982.

Beitz was born March 20, 1924, in Scotts Bluff, Neb. He graduated from the University of Idaho and was a World War II and Korean War Army and Marine Corps veteran. He was a member of Elks Lodge 1468.

Beitz is survived by his wife, Joan; two daughters, Cyndi Beitz and Janine Beitz, and two stepdaughters, Julia Wiley and Debbie Danner, all of Las Vegas; one stepson, Stephen Wiley of Lancaster, Pa.; and three grandchildren.
