By the end of the year people walking through the core office district downtown will be surrounded by lush trees, pedestrian walkways and possibly a waterfall.
The Las Vegas City Council Wednesday approved moving forward with the Lewis Street Corridor pedestrian and streetscape enhancement project.
The city received a $1.82 million federal grant through the National Department of Transportation for the project, and the city contributed $101,000.
The pedestrian-oriented project will run on Lewis Avenue from Casino Center Boulevard to Las Vegas Boulevard.
While the city has the funds for the full project, the council agreed to look into additional funding for extras. SWA Group, which designed the project, said with an additional $348,077, a waterfall and additional amenities like decorative lights and benches can be installed.
Construction is expected to begin in August.
Poetry from the Las Vegas Arts Commission is proposed to be engraved into the sidewalks.
