Letter: Williams owes Garcia an apology

Wednesday, April 4, 2001 | 9:19 a.m.

I am not a fan of Clark County School District Superintendent Carlos Garcia, but he deserves an apology from Assemblyman Wendell Williams for his intemperate remarks.

I am concerned about other aspects of Williams' outburst. It now seems that Edison Schools everywhere, most notably in New York and San Francisco, are under attack by radical black politicians. "Profit" becomes an obscenity and there is never mention of the fact that Edison Schools have yet to turn a profit.

As chairman of the Assembly Education Committee, Williams has a well-proven track record for pushing the interest of the teachers' union. Does this mean the teachers' union will be trying to sandbag Edison Schools in Las Vegas as it has done in other districts?
