Las Vegas area fishing report

LAKE MEAD: Fishing has shown no improvement over the past week as anglers continue to have trouble catching striped bass while the action has been fair for channel catfish and largemouth bass.

Nevada Division of Wildlife creel clerks who were working at Overton Beach over the weekend reported that a pair of boaters managed to catch two dozen stripers just north of the marina. This was about the only good striper news that has been reported over the past week.

Boaters continue to locate schools of stripers with their fish finders, but the fish aren't biting. NDOW says this pattern should change as the lake's water temperature rises.

Until the striper picture improves, NDOW biologists suggest that anglers may wish to switch gears and try their luck for channel catfish. The fish are being caught in shallow coves at night with some of the better action taking place in the Overton Arm.

Jim Heinrich, NDOW biologist, said that nets he has set in shallow water in the Virgin Bowl have resulted in a number of crappie being captured, tagged and released.

Largemouth bass are in coves and are being caught by boaters who are casting artificial worms and jigs to their nests.

LAKE MOHAVE: Anglers who were fishing in the Cottonwood Cove area over the weekend had dismal results with most catching no largemouth or striped bass. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is scheduled to stock rainbow trout at Willow Beach on Thursday.

WAYNE E. KIRCH WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT AREA: Over the weekend anglers had fair action for rainbow trout. Anglers who were fishing at Cold Springs Reservoir appeared to be catching twice as many trout as those who were fishing at Haymeadow Reservoir.

Rainbow trout from Lake Mead Hatchery are being stocked this week at Cold Spring and Haymeadow.

Jack Clifton, NDOW biologist, said that fish surveys that he completed last week at the two lakes resulted in fewer trout being counted than in recent years.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR: Fishing has been good following last week's rainbow trout plants.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR: Anglers who have been fishing at the lake in recent days have been rewarded with good catches of rainbow trout.

COMINS LAKE: Rainbow trout fishing has been slow for anglers who have been fishing with Powerbait and lures. However, one angler who was fly fishing over the weekend said that he caught five rainbow trout with a leech streamer. Two of the fish were in the five-pound range.
