Future of NAACP is in doubt
Monday, April 2, 2001 | 10:56 a.m.
Two hearings set for Tuesday afternoon will determine the future of the NAACP in Las Vegas.
The hearings will focus on last November's disputed election and the possibility that the local branch's charter could be revoked.
The hearings are scheduled for 3 p.m. to discuss the election and 6 p.m. to discuss the charter at the Cheyenne campus of Community College of Southern Nevada, in Room 1685.
Former Assemblyman Gene Collins won the Nov. 18 election by four votes, 159 to 155, over Lonie Chaney, but Chaney then asked the national office of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for a new election.
Chaney had asked for a national representative to be present at the election after questioning the memberships of some of the voters.
