Forget library fines, return the books
Monday, April 2, 2001 | 10:10 a.m.
All 23 Las Vegas-Clark County Library District branches will celebrate amnesty week through Saturday, which would waive any current or existing fines up to $25 that library users haven't paid.
Items must be returned to the library in order to clear debts accrued from overdue fines, and charges from lost or damaged books.
Henderson, North Las Vegas and Boulder City library districts will also observe their own amnesty weeks.
"The fines aren't such a big thing," Gayle Hornaday, assistant director of Henderson Library District, said. "We just want to get our books back."
Henderson libraries normally have an amnesty week that clears all overdue fines regardless of the amount if the person returns the item. In order to do something different, yet remain consistent with other libraries, a $25 credit will be applied to any lost or damaged book in addition to clearing debts.
North Las Vegas Library District will not charge for current overdue materials returned Monday through Saturday. Existing fines will not be cleared.
Boulder City will cover up to $25 in overdue charges, but not toward lost or damaged books.
"The goal is to get people to continue using our libraries," Hornaday said.
