February 21: 'Next Stop Moon' as Glenn Flight Hailed

Story: Jubilant U.S. space experts last night "eyed the moon" after John H. Glenn Jr. flashed triumphantly around the Earth three times in America's first orbital flight and splashed down in the Atlantic about six miles from a recovery ship "in excellent condition."

July 7: Mighty H Bomb Rocks Desert Here

Story: The mightiest nuclear blast within the continental United States yesterday chewed a giant, open-faced crater in the desert floor. The Atomic Energy Commission disclosed it would follow the explosion with two atmospheric tests today -- the first in the country in nearly four years.

July 13: Las Vegas Crime Rate Tops National Average

Story: Despite a crime-fighting force 2 1/2 times the national average, Las Vegas helped Nevada lead the rest of the nation to the highest crime rate in the country, according to the latest report of the Federal Bureau of Investigation released yesterday.

Nevada's major crime rate for under 100,000 was 2,184.3, an increase of nearly 10 percent during 1961 over the previous year.

Aug. 6: Marilyn Monroe is Found Dead in Bedroom

Story: Actress Marilyn Monroe, blonde sex symbol of the modern generation, was found dead in her home early yesterday after taking an overdose of sleeping pills -- her nude body face down on her bed and her hand clutching a telephone.

Police listed the 36-year-old star, who had been depressed about her skidding movie career, as an apparent suicide, but they said they were not certain and scheduled an autopsy for today.

Oct. 28: Possible Settlement of Cuba Crisis Seen

Story: President Kennedy said last night that a new proposal from Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev seemed to indicate a basis for a negotiated settlement of the explosive Cuban crisis.

If his understanding of Khrushchev's letter is correct, Kennedy said, arrangements to negotiate a "permanent solution" of the crisis could begin in New York almost immediately.
