Letter: Why did Reid kill tour ads?

Friday, Sept. 29, 2000 | 10:39 a.m.

We learned that there will be no more advertisements anywhere of these free informational tours after this year. Why? Because Sen. Harry Reid created legislation eliminating the $3,000 for the ads -- not the tours, just the ads for the tours.

What possible reason could the senator have for doing this? The Yucca Mountain budget is over $200 million and he deletes $3,000. Certainly not for a savings. Could it be he is afraid we might see the site and make an informative decision on whether we think it is good or bad? Or does the government need the $3,000 for something else?

Why not allow our citizens the privilege of making up their own minds after touring the facility by restoring the $3,000, so at least the people will be made aware of the tours, even if they don't take advantage of them.

We recommend everyone take the tour. See for yourself what Yucca Mountain is all about. You might be surprised.
