Letter: Refuse to pay for events that torture animals
Friday, Sept. 29, 2000 | 10:39 a.m.
This year again during the early "equestrian events," a horse forced to jump over a high hurdle broke his leg and was euthanized after much pain and suffering -- those of us unfortunate enough to have seen this were sickened and saddened.
Jumping is not something horses choose to do naturally -- they are terrified and the behind-the-scenes "training" methods are painful, grueling and very stressful to the animal.
Any type of event requiring animals to perform is cruel and unusual punishment to the animal. We can help by our protests and refusals to purchase tickets to rodeos, circuses, Las Vegas Strip shows featuring animal "entertainment" -- any and all events with animals forced to perform. Absolutely no exceptions!
The arrogance and cruelty of those making a living from helpless and defenseless animals can only be countered by those of us who love and care for animals and believe they have rights to live out their lives in peace.
It is up to us to help those who have no voice.
