Political notebook: Gore daughter to speak at LV event
Thursday, Sept. 28, 2000 | 10:32 a.m.
Kristin Gore, the 23-year-old Harvard-educated daughter of Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore, will be stumping for her father this weekend in Las Vegas.
Gore, the second of Vice President Al and Tipper Gore's four children, will be the guest of honor at a Saturday dinner hosted by the National Federation of Filipino American Associations at its Fourth National Empowerment Congress at Bally's.
There are about 35,000 Filipino American's living in Southern Nevada, NAFFAA says, noting it is the largest Asian ethnic group.
New Gore ads
The Al Gore presidential campaign Wednesday began airing a new 30-second television advertisement in Nevada highlighting the vice president's record of public service.
It traces Gore's career from his military days in Vietnam to his environmental work in Congress to his eight years as vice president and efforts to reform welfare.
Seniors to gather
A gathering of Nevada seniors supporting Al Gore for president will take place at 10 a.m. Friday at the New Frontier.
The discussion will focus on agenda issues including voluntary prescription drug coverage for 40 million Americans under Medicare, the patients' bill of rights and opposition to Social Security privatization, said the Nevada Seniors for Gore-Lieberman 2000.
Mobilizing women
Noting that less than half of the eligible women voters in America go to the polls, the American Association of University Women says it is conducting a campaign to mobilize women to vote Nov. 7.
The organization says women need to get more involved in politics, and Congress is addressing issues vital to women, including the right to abortions, potential reductions in public education funding and the patients' bill of rights.
