DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. will rely on Michelin to supply the majority of tires for the most popular versions of the Explorer sport utility vehicle, the company said today.
The moves put more distance between Ford's flagship product and Bridgestone/Firestone Inc., which had been the sole supplier of Explorer tires.
The automaker had decided to use Michelin as a supplier for the 2002 Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer before the recall of 6.5 million Firestone tires linked to 101 deaths and over 400 injuries.
