Letter: Science ignored when it comes to nuke storage

Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000 | 9:51 a.m.

The ultimate proof is on Page 1, Sept. 20: "Permanent Yucca work could start before it is licensed." This is the final proof that this unscientific push to create a nuclear repository in Yucca Mountain is bereft of standards.

It is unscientific to only study one site.

It is unscientific to ignore earthquake activity and water incursion in Yucca Mountain.

It is unscientific to lower scientific standards on radiation.

It is scientific to leave the nuclear waste where it was produced and store it in the indestructible casks (which are strong enough to survive accidents and in which no nuclear reaction can occur). These casks can then be entombed in a repository building, on site!

It is unscientific to transport nuclear waste thousands of miles when it is unnecessary. What about transmutation on site in the future?

It is arrogant for the federal government to ignore science and licensing standards.
